Summary: At a remote fortress called the Sanctuary of the Redeemers, a secretive sect of warrior monks are raising young captives from early childhood, giving them intensive training in preparation for a forthcoming holy war. Sensing something special about one boy, Thomas Cale, the Lord Militant takes personal charge of his training, driving the boy to achieve more and more. However, after witnessing one of the Redeemers performing an unspeakable act, Cale realises that he must leave this place or die. His only hope is to cross the arid Scablands to Memphis, a city the opposite of the Sanctuary in every way - beautiful, Godless, and corrupt
