The book features paintings from 'early' artists such as Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, through the paintings of innovative artists of the mid-twentieth century such as Edward Hopper, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Grant Wood, to the ground-breaking work of the 'pop artists' Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and Robert Rauschenburg.
