Summary: When Florentino Ariza first sees Fermina Daza and immediately falls in love it is the beginning of a passion that extends over 50 years, between 1880 and 1920. Florentino courts his Fermina solely by letter, but she rejects him, and marries the urbane Dr. Juvenal Urbino, a relationship that is at first loveless but that becomes remarkable in its strength. Florentino remains faithful in his own way; he has many affairs, but none contain the depth of the love he once again declares when Urbino dies.
