The book (originally published as A Gun in My Hand) depicts the grisly battles of the Italian campaign and shows what it was to be a young returned soldier in New Zealand where rigid attitudes permitted neither grieving nor healing. It is a story about courage, guilt, loss, isolation and a neglectful society.
